Scores from water polo on Saturday at IUP. Games show The Lawrenceville School vs. us (whatever we are / Parks kids from Pittsburgh); Boys game, played first. Score 7-3. Girls game, 11-4; JV game, 11-6. All games went into the favor or the NJ side.

Max asked, how did we do. We played very, very well.

Play included a few silly flubs, as rookies are expected to make. We had a hard time covering all six of their players on defense. Great coverage on a few of the players, but seemingly, one of their players would be open and their squad was patient and passed to that open player. Then we were in trouble. They'd make a type 1 shot.

Our goal keeping with our players was very good. The down side on that was a few times the ball would be tossed down the pool and the other side would scoop it up. But once a goalie had an assist with a long pass to a counter attack as well.

Our shooting was weak. Often we'd toss the ball right to ther goalie. Once or twice we hit their goalie right on the kisser. Once their goalie didnt even see the shot but it was blocked -- a hard shot -- as it was aimed right beteen the eyes.

We did well on hole defense and our hole play was okay. That was a worry of mine going into the game. I figured they'd kill us there and that didn't happen.

On offense, we took too many shots after 1 or 2 passes. Seldom did we get to four passes. And, as stated above, our shots were not zingers into open areas. We'll need to take our time with the ball and work to get open so as to make a better target for the pass reception.

Our passing was solid. Lots of looping and tall passes. Twice we had passes fall right onto the heads of a team-mate who was unaware that the ball was being delivered.

Our swimming and energy was fantastic, especially from the ones who had the swimming background. Girls C and L played nearly the entire game and had a wicked workout with lots of travel all around the pool, outswimming them frequently. On the boys side we did get tierd -- but we were often right with them and when we were fresh we were just as strong as them for sure. We all battled in the water and had great effort -- and it helped and showed well for our side.

We were always trying to get new subs into the games and rotate our players. It was wonderful that so many made the trip as all were needed and we did get lots of opportunities to play. So, our bench strength was a huge asset.

Next summer when we play them again, we'll be able to win games. I didn't expect to win games this time. But I was worried that we'd not even get any goals. That was proven to be false. We could score. It was exciting to do so. But, we could have scored much more if our shots were placed better.

With M, twins, S and R on the girls side -- we would have been more competitive this year. We didn't have any 'ringers' -- and it would have been weird, but a blessing, to have a superstar to fill a few shifts -- but that didn't happen. So, we had to do all the play ourselves and that team felt like a team for sure -- pulling for each other, cheering, having fun.
