Women's Soccer in 2010[]
EQUATORIAL GUINEA has a women's soccer team nickname: Nzalang Nacional.
Previous appearances: 2006, 2008 (winners)
The defending champions qualified without kicking a ball after supposed opponents Namibia withdrew at the final round of the qualifying series.
The team caused the biggest stir when they edged past all the big guns to the ultimate during the last edition in 2008, which they hosted. Prior to that, they had stated their intent after a beating South Africa 2-1 in an impressive result in a Beijing 2008 Olympic Games qualifier on February 18, 2007, but lost the return leg 4-2.
In the 2008 edition, which they hosted, they went undefeated in Group A which featured Cameroon, Congo, and Mali. They impressively defeated Nigeria 1-0 in the semi final and went on to win the Championship beating South Africa 2-1. They became the first nation nation other than Nigeria to win the continental title.
The defending champions are housed in Group B alongside thrice runners-up Ghana, Cameroon and Algeria. They open their campaign against Cameroon on November 2, face Algeria on November 5 before coming against Ghana’s Black Princesses three days later for a place at the next edition of the FIFA World Cup.
Key Players[]
Genoveva Anonma (USV Jena, Germany) - Genevova was the star of the Equatorial Guinean team that won the title in 2008. She emerged the top scorer with six goals and also the Most Valuable Player of the tournament as the host cruised to victory. The 21-year old has since joined German side USV Jena, where she is regarded as one of the key players of the team. Anonma will be hoping to aid her team to successfully defend their title and also qualify for the first time for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Jade Boho (Rayo Vallecano, Spain) - Jade Boho Sayo was born on August 30, 1986 in Valladolid, Spain. She has naturalized for the Equatorial Guinea despite having played for Spain at the U-19 level. She has been a member of the Nzalang Nacional since 2010 and will be making her debut appearance at the continental championship.
Profile of Coach, Jean Paul Mbiha - Congolese Jean Paul Mbiha is the man who will be guiding Equatorial Guinea at South Africa 2010 Championship. Not much is known about the Congolese, but after an intensive two-month training with team where they pitched their strength against some local male teams, the defending champions appear poised to retain the trophy they won in 2008.
