Dylan Armstrong is aptly named. What else would you call a three-time Canadian champion in Shot Put, a four-time Canadian champion in Hammer Throw and a former Canadian Discus Champion, but arm-strong?
The 6’4”, 250lb-native of Kamloops, British Columbia, looks to make his Olympic debut this summer in Beijing. The 2008 season has already seen Armstrong set a new Canadian record in the shot put, with a throw of 20.92m in Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro – a toss that earned him a gold medal. He has also earned international podiums at meets in Spain, the Netherlands and California, in addition to two gold medals at Canadian meets. The 2007 Pan American Games Shot Put champion now sets his sights on Beijing.
As a junior competitor at the 1999 Pan American Junior Championships, he won a medal in three throwing disciplines: hammer throw (gold), shot put (silver) and discus (bronze). The next year, Armstrong earned a silver medal at the IAAF World Junior Championships in the hammer throw.
Canada (also known as CAN) has never won an Olympic medal in the shot put.
