June 28, 2013

Penn State men's and women's swimming & diving head coach John Hargis announced his resignation, effective June 30, 2013. Hargis will be returning to his alma mater, Auburn, where he will serve as associate head coach. Penn State Director of Athletics Dave Joyner said a national search will immediately begin for his successor.

"I would like to thank John for his outstanding service to Penn State," Joyner said. "He has brought both the men's and women's programs to new heights and the future is very bright our swimming & diving teams. I wish John the best of luck in his return to his alma mater."

"My 5 years in Happy Valley have been wonderful," Hargis said. "The success we have had both in the pool and classroom is a true testament to the student-athletes we have guided through the program. State College will always be a special place in mine and my families lives. I can promise you we will forever be Penn State proud!"

Hargis has moved the Nittany Lion swimming & diving programs into the national spotlight with both teams sitting in the Top 25 during the 2012-13 season. Last season, Penn State swimmers broke school records on 15 different occasions, while 39 women and 16 men wrote their names onto the all-time top-10 in school history. There were 13 women and seven men that participated at the 2013 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships with one men's and one women's diver participating at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships. A pair of men's relay teams claimed first team All-America honors, while nine different swimmers claimed 10 honorable mention All-American accolades.

During his first four seasons at the helm, Hargis has seen 10 of his pupils write their names atop of the record books on the women's side in their respective events and all five relay school records have been set during his time in University Park. On the national level, 10 different women's swimmers have garnered All-America accolades on 30 occasions and 17 of his female student-athletes competed at the 2012 US Olympic Trials. The Nittany Lion women's team has also excelled in the classroom with 88 student-athletes claiming Academic All-Big Ten honors during Hargis' tenure. In 2011, Hargis served as an assistant coach on the USA Swimming World University Games staff, where he worked with Nittany Lion Amy Modglin.

The men's program has also enjoyed its fair share of success with 11 student-athletes claiming All-America honors on 24 occasions under Hargis. In 2012, 17 Penn Staters headed to Omaha, Neb. to compete in the US Olympic Trials and during his first season at the helm he coached backstroker Patrick Schirk to a silver medal at the World University Games in the 200 backstroke. The men's squad has also found success in the classroom with 45 student-athletes taking home Academic All-Big Ten accolades under Hargis.

John Hargis Named Penn State Head Coach[]

University Park, PA , June 23rd, 2008

Director of Athletics Tim Curley today announced that John Hargis has been named the head coach of Penn State’s men’s and women’s swimming program. A Nittany Lion assistant swimming coach from 2003-06, Hargis is currently the head coach of the women’s swimming program at Arkansas-Little Rock as well as the head coach and CEO of the Little Rock Arkansas Dolphins club swimming program.

“We are very excited to announce John’s hiring as the next head coach of our swimming programs,” said Curley. “John has demonstrated that he has the ability to continue the success of our swimming program both athletically and academically. He has been a swimmer at the highest level, having won an Olympic gold medal, and he also has a large array of experience as a coach, both on the collegiate and the club levels. We are extremely pleased to welcome John and his wife, Lauren and son John, back to Happy Valley and are prepared to help him keep our swimming programs moving forward as he gets started right away during the important July recruiting period.”

“We are delighted to have John Hargis return to Penn State as our new head coach of men’s and women’s swimming,” said Susan Delaney-Scheetz, Penn State Associate Director of Athletics and Senior Woman Administrator. “John’s knowledge, enthusiasm and passion for swimming and Penn State will enable him to take the program to new heights.”

Hargis will become just the second head swimming coach at Penn State since the men’s and women’s swimming programs were merged into one following the 2000-01 season. He will be just the fourth head women’s coach in program history and just the sixth head coach in the history of the men’s program.

“I am glad to be back in the blue and white of Penn State and it is exciting to be back in the tradition of excellence that Penn State provides, both athletically and academically,” said Hargis. “Both my family and I are excited to once again be part of the Penn State culture and we look forward to continuing the tradition that has been set by those before us in the swimming program.”

Hargis left his assistant post at Penn State in September of 2006 to take over the Arkansas Dolphins premier swim club, which was also his former club team. In this role, he directed the program to the overall team state long course title in 2007, winning both the men’s and women’s team title for only the second time in program history. He coached several NCAA, Olympic Trials and U.S. Nationals qualifiers and also directed all aspects of men¹s recruiting. Hargis was instrumental in helping to recruit 2008 NCAA Champion Pat Schirk to Penn State. He also assisted with several other aspects and day-to-day operations of the program, including the creation and implementation of a training regiment for both the men’s and women’s sprinters, breaststrokers and IMers.

Prior to coming to Penn State, Hargis was an assistant coach at UNLV for one year in the 2002-03 season, where he also coached NCAA, Olympic and U.S. Nationals qualifiers and guided the Mountain West Conference Male Swimmer of the Year. He was also the head age group coach for the Raleigh Swimming Association club team for one year prior to his stint at UNLV. Before that, he served for three years as an assistant to the athletic director at his alma mater, Auburn University.
