Dr. Josh White is the new assistant at the University of Michigan. That's the word from head coach Mike Bottom in the Detroit News. White has been the head coach at Division III Pomona-Pitzer for the past two seasons. The pair will be joined on deck by former U-M coach Jon Urbanchek who will assist with the transition.
White guided the Sagehen men and women since 2006 and was previously a Division III national champion at Kenyon College. He's not without Division I or Big Ten roots however, having earned his Ph.D. in Human Performance at Indiana University's Counsilman Center for the Science of Swimming.
While in Bloomington, White served for three years as the volunteer assistant coach for the IU Men’s Team. As an assistant coach for IU, White had experience coaching swimmer’s placing as high as second at the World Championships and World University Games. Additionally, White has spent time coaching with Bloomington South High School and has coached club with The Indiana Swim Team and Bloomington Swim Club. Coach White has spent the last several summers coaching at swimming camps and lecturing on the topics of nutrition, metabolism, and training.
Dr. White is a 2000 summa cum laude graduate of Kenyon College where he was a three time All-American and two time NCAA DIII champion in the 800 Free Relay. Kenyon College was NCAA DIII national team champion during each of White’s four years in college.
Additionally, another member of Kenyon's class of 2000, Jessen Book, is expected to be named the new assistant at Ohio State University. Book and White have long been friends, which should make for some interesting conversation come November 22, 2008. That's when the longtime football rivals match-up in Columbus.
