'FREE Kayaking on Lake Elizabeth!

Background[]

Beginning July 16, 2008, Kayak Pittsburgh is opening up a free concession at the city's oldest park, Allegheny Commons, on picturesque Lake Elizabeth. Continuing every other Wednesday through October, beginner-friendly kayaking will be brought to the lake's edge, where instruction, assistance and paddling will be provided from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

This offer is funded in part by generous support from the Grable Foundation as a part of the Charm Bracelet Project Fund.

The Allegheny Commons is a little-known gem of Pittsburgh, featuring a tremendous arboretum of huge trees, as well as the National Aviary, the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh and lovely Lake Elizabeth. The lake currently is the passive centerpiece of the Allegheny Commons Park, with foot bridges spanning an island for spectators. Venture Outdoors intends to engage both visitors and residents of the North Side by activating this historic body of water as a beginner-friendly destination for flat water kayaking.

Lake Elizabeth kayak outings will begin with basic paddling instruction, life-jacket fitting, and then an easy unguided 20-minute paddle around the lake. No registration is required.

Look for other Venture Outdoors activities on the North Side, including the new North Side Charms Bike Tours. Throughout the summer, themed rides will depart from Allegheny Commons and highlight the art and culture of the neighborhood.
