2008 CHAMPION WIL SINGLEY FAVORED IN THE MONEY BOX CAP 2K Open Water Race[]

Southlake Carroll High School's Wil Singley is favored to repeat his overall championship in next Sunday's, May 3, 2009, Money Box Cap 2k Open Water Race in Lady Bird Lake. In 2007, Singley won the boys side of the High School Division, which serves as the ASA Open Water Swimming Texas High School Championship, but was barely nipped by UT's Caleb McDermott for the overall title. Last year, Singley won both.

Southlake Carroll's Open Water team, which won both the Boys and the Girls Texas High School Championships in 2007 and 2008, should easily repeat this year retaining the Boys and Girls titles.

The Money Box Cap 2k is the 7th Annual Open Water Race and Pledge Swim. Participants in The Money Box Cap 2k will race or leisurely swim 2,000 meters for pledges from a little east of Red Bud Isle down to the finish at the Texas Rowing Center near Austin High to promote clean water, to promote health and fitness, and to raise money for Swimming Lessons for disadvantaged children and for Deep Eddy Pool.

1976 Olympic Triple Gold Medalist, Jim Montgomery, from Dallas, and 1968 Olympian Peter Williams, from Mercersburg, PA will be among the participants that range from ages 13 to 70+.

Spectators can best view the race from the Capital Cruises double-decker boat, which accompanies the race, or from the Mopac Pedestrian Bridge. Call 327-1280 for tickets for the Cruise. Watching from the Mopac Pedestrian Bridge is free. There will be no spectator access at Red Bud Isle.

Representatives of the media will be welcome to view the race from the Capital Cruises double-decker boat that accompanies the race or from the finish at the Texas Rowing Center dock.

The American Swimming Association, in cooperation with Austin Parks & Recreation Department, is helping to bring this event to the Austin community.
