Academics to keep Penn State quarterback on bench[]

July 29, 2011, By Ron Musselman, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Penn State University third-string quarterback, Paul Jones likely will miss the 2011 season due to academics.

Coach Joe Paterno confirmed the news prior to the Big Ten Conference's kickoff luncheon in July 2011.

Jones, 6 feet 3 and 245 pounds, has struggled academically since graduating from Sto-Rox High School and enrolling early at Penn State in January 2010.

He was rated the No. 2 prep quarterback in the country by Scout.com as a high school senior.

With Jones out, Penn State's No. 3 quarterback likely will be either junior Kevin Newsome or redshirt junior Shane McGregor, a former walk-on.

Sophomore Rob Bolden and redshirt junior Matt McGloin, another former walk-on, will compete for the starting job when preseason practice opens at the start of the 2011 season in early August.
