Pitt Awarded 2010 Big East Championship[]

Providence, RI , September 26th, 2008

After 16 years of traveling to a neutral site, Pitt’s swimming and diving program has been awarded the 2010 BIG EAST Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships, announced by league officials.

“We are excited that the Big East is bringing the championship back to Pitt,” Head Swimming and Diving Coach Chuck Knoles said. “This will give us the chance to show off the renovation of Trees Pool and to host one of the most exciting Big East Championships. We intend to pack the stands!”

Pitt last served as host in 1998. The event has since been held at a neutral location, but will return to a conference school’s campus when Joseph C. Trees Pool becomes the host for the 16th time.

Recently renovated this past spring, Trees Pool is now the site of a newly installed diving board platform and railings as well as upgrades to the circulation, drainage, and heating systems.

In 2007-08, Pitt’s men’s and women’s teams finished third and fourth, respectively, in the Big East Championships. Senior Alex Volovetski (Brandon, Fla. /Armwood) led the men’s squad, as he earned the Most Outstanding Diver Award. Additionally, Assistant Head Coach for Diving Julian Krug garnered the Men's Diving Coach of the Year Award, his fifth overall.

On the women’s side, Agnes Mago set a school record in the 200 fly, placing second in the finals at 2:00.16. Sophomore Cookie McIntyre (York, Pa./West York Area) finished just behind Mago, placing fourth (2:02.97) in the same event.

The Panthers’ annual Blue/Gold meet will be held at Trees Pool on Friday, Oct. 10, 2008 at 3:30 p.m.
