Background[]

  • Word used in GitHub
  • A repository is usually used to organize a single project. Repositories can contain folders and files, images, videos, spreadsheets, and data sets – anything your project needs. Include a README, or a file with information about your project. GitHub makes it easy to add one at the same time you create your new repository. It also offers other common options such as a license file.
  • Your hello-world repository can be a place where you store ideas, resources, or even share and discuss things with others.

Insights[]

In revision control systems, a repository[1] is an on-disk data structure which stores metadata for a set of files and/or directory structure. Depending on whether the version control system in use is distributed (for instance, Git or Mercurial) or centralized (Subversion or Perforce, for example), the whole set of information in the repository may be duplicated on every user's system or may be maintained on a single server. Some of the metadata that a repository contains includes, among other things:

A historical record of changes in the repository. A set of commit objects. A set of references to commit objects, called heads.
