Timing and coordination for Fly:
In butterfly instruction, a key to good stroke is to "raise the head before the hands leave the water, and get it in before the hands enter the water."
1. One arm Fly swim, other hand at side, no breathing.
2. One arm Fly swim, other hand at side, breathe to side, after pull with head returned before hand.
3. One arm Fly swim, breath to front, chin on water, neck stretched.
4. Swim full stroke, breathe only when absolutely necessary (chin on water).
5. Swim full stroke, breathe every third stroke.
6. Swim full stroke, breathe ar will.
7. Swim drill 6 using fists (brings in use of forearms and helps arm bend in initial part of pull.)
8. Swim drill 6 with clenched fists until the hands reach the hip line, from where the stroke is continued with open hands.
9. Dive butterfly is a drill which helps the development of the technique and the ability to swim distance on butterfly. With the arms extended in front, the swimmer pushes off under water, does three or four dolphin kicks, surfaces and then with a butterfly recovery of the arms dives down again for a further three or four kicks and so on for 100 or 200 meters. Remember to come up to pull.
10. As above exercise but reduce the number of kicks.
11. Continue drills 9 and l0 over a period until the normal two beat kick stroke arrives with the shallow dive.
12. Eventually from this, a 200 meter Fly swimmer can be developed.
13. A combination of good quantity of the exercises would be 25 meters right arm Fly, 50 meters dive Fly, 25 meters left arm Fly, 25 meters full stroke, 50 meters dive Fly, 25 meters full stroke.
