Putin pushes Sochi 2014 bid with IOC[]
October 9, 2006, Russian President Vladimir Putin pushed for Sochi to host the 2014 Winter Olympics during a meeting with Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee.
"We are grateful to your country for nominating Sochi as a candidate," Rogge was quoted by the Interfax news agency.
The Winter Games have never been held in Russia, and Putin's government is putting its full support behind Sochi. The resort town, between the Black Sea and mountains, is one of three finalists along with Salzburg, Austria, and Pyeongchang, South Korea.
The IOC panel will visit Sochi on Feb. 20-23, 2007. The panel will vote on the host city in Guatemala City in July 2007.
