Background[]
Passing your deep water swim test is always a big highlight for a youngster. Some kids take five weeks to work past the fear and get comfortable in the water. Others can float on by in a matter of hours.
Everyone has to learn how to swim, just like we learned to walk, talk and read. Close your lips. Float like a boat. Kick, pull, put your head in the water. When you can swim like a fish, you'll have a lot more fun at the pool and everyone around you will have a better time as well without the worries.
Respect the water. Learn to swim.
Swimming failures are NOT like those in other sports.[]
When a basketball player goes to the foul line to take a shot and he or she misses the free-throw attempt, that is sad. Oh well. No bucket. No problem. But, the outcomes are different when a person gets to the side of the pool. Getting into deep water and missing his or her attempt in swimming is often deadly. Failure in the water and at the pool is not the same type of failure one faces with a missed shot on the basketball court. If the person misses a shot in basketball, there is no risk of death and drowning. If a youngster fails in deep water, and if a youngster can't swim across a lake or a stream, then death is probable.

Insights[]
Safety is always important in swimming,[]
Safety is #1. Aquatic sports are wonderful and generally really safe, if you know how to swim and behave. For youngsters, drowding is, sadly, at the top of the list as a cause of sudden, accidental deaths. Potential risks associated with going to the beach, boating on the rivers and visiting a water park are much different for those that can swim.
You have to be smart around the pool. Know what to do. Act accordingly. Acting in foolish, stupid and reckless ways gets you thrown out of the pool. Sadly, some kids have gotten goofy and became outlaws at the pool. Lifeguards and coaches don't have time for trouble makers at these facilities. Respect the belongings of others. Use clean language. Pool behaviors matter. It takes some effort and understanding to keep everyone safe around the water. Everyone has a role in helping to reducing accidents.
Learn how to swim well. Plus, figure out the aquatic environment. Learn about conditions in your new surroundings. With Swim & Water Polo Camp, we provide tutorials about a wide range of topics including riptides and jellyfish.
