Insights[]
You have to show and know your stuff to be a lifeguard. This badge helps prepare you for the course and eventual duties of being a guard, when the time is right.
Pre Lifeguard[]
Displays readiness for enrollment to lifeguard training, pending age requirements.
Show your ability to swim 200 yards without stopping, tread water for 2 minutes without hands, and retrieve a brick from the bottom of the deep end (12 feet deep, generally).
Completion Time[]
The time for testing to get the badge could be less than 15-minutes. But the time to prepare varies based on swim abilities and know how. Reading the lifeguard and swim instructor manuals helps. Watching instructional videos and study with the CLOH.org eBook helps as well. In general, expect 10 hours of casual reading and light study. The tutorial software includes more than 200 questions and answers.
Evaluation Criteria[]
- Swim 200 yards without stopping.
- Tread water for two minutes without the use of hands.
- Carry a brick up from the bottom of the deep end. (Suggested depth in the deep end is typically 12 feet)
- Complete the section in the CLOH.org eBook and software for Digital Badges/Swimming/Pre Lifeguard.
The supervised evaluation process is directed by a Swim & Water Polo coach. Successful completion of the evaluation by the swim coach comes with a photo including the student and coach at the pool. That photo gets uploaded along with a report from the software review.
Artifacts[]
Badge Issuers[]
Swim & Water Polo Coaches act as the assessors and issuers along with the tutorial software.
Training[]
Summer Dreamers Swim & Water Polo coaches get instructions in the City of Learning process during training by supervisors before and throughout the activities. As part of this initiation, staff is made aware of the requirements for the pre-lifeguard badge and taught how to perform the necessary evaluations.
Additional Considerations[]
This badge makes a productive goal for Summer Dreamer athletes. It is not a requirement. The efforts mark an opportunity to increase future employment possibilities while also improving overall fitness. Students should obtain the deep water badge first. Similar requirements exist with Digital Badges/SKWIM. Both can be earned at the same time.
