Tech Literacy badge2 1

Background[]

Part of the writing requirements for the Summer Dreamers Swim & Water Polo and Mindful Eating, Yoga, & Multimedia programs involve blog posts or journal entries for the students that make use of the wiki platform and the individual profiles that they are required to create. This process gives students and coaches alike access to this athletic knowledge platform and the ability to create and edit original or informational content across the site. The Tech Literacy Badge encourages all users to develop their knowledge of the wiki platform by contributing or editing pages, in addition to creating and maintaining their own personal wiki page that showcases their journalistic work.

Insights[]

The requirements for this badge shold foster an exchange of ideas, both in terms of the users being exposed to new information on the wiki and contributing their own insight in places where knowledge is lacking in particular. This interplay is the basis for a thriving community of learning such as this and is why enthusiastic participation is rewarded with the Tech Literacy Badge.

Leaderboard[]

Tentative Requirements[]

  • 100 wiki edits
  • Wiki profile page up to date (includes link to City of Learning profile and complete, up to date list of acquired badges)
  • 10 original contributions to the wiki (e.g. photos, full pages, etc.)

Notes[]

  • Web literacy is about how our students and athletes can be better web citizens. And for the leaders, how to code too.
  • Students who make a submission to the teen media contenst, The Labsy Awards, hosted by the Carneigie Library of Pittsburgh, can claim credit for 20 wiki page edits. If the art work has a theme with Summer Dreamers and/or Swim & Water Polo, and/or Mindful Eating, then 40 wiki page edits are credited to that individual. So, rather than needing to make 100 page edits, the total goes to 80 for any submission and 60 for themed submissions. Submissions need to beat the deadline for the teen media contest, Wednesday, July 22, 2015.

Technology Literacy Description[]

This badge indicates the tech literacy of the earner.

The badge acknowledges that the earner made significant, positive contribution to their online community.

Completion Time[]

It will take around a week of time to complete the requirements to earn this badge.

Evaluation Criteria[]

Requirements:

  • 100 wiki edits
  • Wiki profile page up to date (includes link to City of Learning profile and complete, up to date list of acquired badges)
  • 10 original contributions to the CLOH wiki (e.g. photos, full pages, etc.)

After the user completes these requirements, a wiki moderator will bestow this badge.

Artifacts[]

Badge Issuers[]

CLOH wiki moderators with the BGC, and Summer Dreamers coaches (often the same people) will be the distributors of this badge.

Training[]

Summer Dreamers Swim & Water Polo coaches will be oriented in the City of Learning badging process during their initial training by the Summer Dreamer supervisors and management before the summer session. As part of this initiation, they will be made aware of the requirements for the tech literacy badge, build their own wiki profile and contribute edits as moderators, and be taught how to perform the necessary evaluation to award the badge.

Additional Considerations[]

This badge is a goal for all students and members of the program. The online community is not restricted to just informational material collected by the coaches or creative material from the students. To foster a growing resource and community, this badge encourages development of the knowledge and skills required to contribute to this community--towards the overall goals of literacy, community, and knowledge.

This badge has requirements--specifically the creative blog or journal pages--that can be fulfilled while working towards other Summer Dreamers badges, such as the Yoga badge.
