Body Scan

Background[]

Students in Mindful Eating learn mindful training practices including the body scan. Motivated students can work beyond the classroom to earn this Digital Badges/Mindfulness/Body Scan.

Insights[]

Teachers and coaches at Summer Dreamers are the best resource to help students understand the details. See Richard King, Tim Krupar or Mark Rauterkus for extra instructions.

Criterion for Digital Badges/Mindfulness/Body Scan[]

  • Learn how to do a body scan. This happens in class as a group exercise.
  • Know that you can do a body scan sitting or lying down. You do need a place where you feel comfortable, relaxed, and focused on the exercise.
  • Identify a place and a time at home that fits for practice.
  • Know how to use your flashlight of attention to move slowly through your body's sensations. Scans can happen from head to feet or from feet to head.
  • Know the benefits: stress management and increased body awareness.
  • Learn how to find the guided exercises for body scan on the wiki and on the Mindful Pittsburgh websites.
  • Practice body scan at home three times per week for two weeks. Plus, enter a journal reflection for every time you practice your body scan.
    • You can practice the body scan exercise in a guided meditation using audio files. Or practice without the audio files and do the body scan at a self-directed pace.
  • Write a summary post for the wiki with the body scan checklist. A chart and routine paperwork can be used too.

Artifacts[]

Badge Issuers[]

Summer Dreamers Mindful Eating staff will be the issuers of the badge.

Training[]

Staff get training on the City of Learning badging process during training by BGC management. As part of initiation, staff is taught about the requirements and the necessary evaluation to award it.

Additional Considerations[]

Earning this badge will be a requirement for all students in the Summer Dreamers Mindful Eating program as the programming fulfills all of the requirements of the badge. This badge is connected to the other mindfulness badges as well. In addition, the requirement of writing a reflective summary routine can fulfill part of the Routines badge.
